🌿 Large dark green and cream white marbled leaves • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ XXL structural plant
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, the Dieffenbachia 'Vesuvius' naturally grows in moist, shaded undergrowth. Its large oval dark green leaves with irregular cream white marbled patterns — each leaf different from the next — give it a striking graphic and luminous presence. At 80 cm, it is a major structural plant among our large indoor plants and tropical plants.
Which Dieffenbachia variety to choose?
The Dieffenbachia genus offers very different sizes and patterns — here is how the 'Vesuvius' ranks among the varieties in the catalog:
- Dieffenbachia 'Vesuvius' (this plant) — large dark green leaves with cream white marbled patterns, imposing stature (H80 cm | Pot Ø27 cm). The most graphic XXL version.
- Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Snow' — green and white leaves with a spectacular white central vein, upright habit (H75 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The most elegant white-veined version.
- Dieffenbachia 'Mars' — dark green leaves with contrasting cream white spots, medium size (H50 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most compact and contrasting version.
- Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' — cream white leaves with green edges, very bright, compact size. The whitest and brightest version.
- Dieffenbachia 'Compacta' — dark green leaves speckled with white, dense and bushy habit (H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most compact version.
Light & location
- Light: partial shade to bright indirect light — avoid direct sun which burns and fades the marbled patterns. Good brightness enhances the contrast between dark green and cream white.
- Ideal: spacious living room, bright entrance, office, reading corner near an East or North-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-drained — potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings. Its fleshy stems store some water reserve and tolerate neglect better than ferns or Calatheas.
- Frequency: about 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and saucer.
- Humidity: prefers 50–60% humidity — mist leaves regularly.
- Fertilizer: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Pruning: remove dead or yellowing leaves at the base — wear gloves, the sap irritates skin and mucous membranes.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Entrance focal point: placed alone in a bright entrance, its large marbled leaves immediately create a strong and graphic plant presence — it is one of the most effective plants to structure a large indoor space.
- Large format composition: pair it with a Strelitzia nicolai with large paddle-shaped leaves and a Zamioculcas with shiny green foliage — three distinct shapes, three very different textures for a tropical atmosphere composition that is very structured.
- Ideal pot: a Brussels anthracite or a Bfor soft anthracite creates a strong contrast with the cream white foliage — dark tones enhance the brightness of the marbled patterns.
Verdeia tips
- Wear gloves when pruning or repotting: Dieffenbachia sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate skin and mucous membranes — wash your hands after handling and avoid touching your eyes.
- Propagate easily in spring: cut a stem with 2 to 3 leaves and place it in a glass of water — propagating plants by cuttings is especially simple with this species which roots in 2 to 3 weeks.
- Rotate the pot every two weeks: Dieffenbachia orients its large leaves toward the light — regular rotation ensures a balanced and even silhouette from all sides.
